Special information about the physical characteristics in a coded form. The information may represent the whole item or parts of an item such as accompanying material.
The physical characteristics are often related to information in other parts of the MARC record especially from field 300 (Physical Description) or one of the 5XX note fields.
Field has a generic tree structure, whereby codes given in 007/00 (Category of material) determine the data elements defined for subsequent character positions.
The data elements in field 007 are positionally defined and the number of character positions in field 007 depends upon the code contained in 007/00. Character position 00 contains a code that identifies the category of material. The fill character (|) is not allowed in this position. The fill character may be used in any other character position when the cataloging agency makes no attempt to code the position.
The categories of material for which field 007 is applicable in bibliographic records are presented in the following order in the field description: map, electronic resource, globe, tactile material, projected graphic, microform, nonprojected graphic, motion picture, kit, notated music, remote-sensing image, sound recording, text, videorecording, and unspecified.
Each 007 tree structure for a particular category of material has a defined length and when it occurs, all positions must be present. Fields 007 for motion pictures and electronic resources are the only instances where the length of the field may vary. These each have a basic set of defined character positions and an extension set that may follow the basic set. For example, for motion pictures the basic set contains eight positions (007/00-07) should always be used. An institution may choose additionally to code position 007/08 through position 007/22. The coding of any character position in the extension set requires that the whole extension set contains a code of a fill character (|).
The list below contains the code values for 007/00 (Category of material) which define the subsequent position definition tree. Character position definition and scope for other positions in field 007 can be found in one of the sections for the categories of material (e.g., Sound recording) that follow this general section. Examples of field 007 are given only in the specific category of material sections.

In 1981, the present generalized approach to coding physical description characteristics in field 007 was defined. Prior to that time, this field was defined only in the visual materials and music specifications and contained a variable number of fixed-length entries. The field was not repeatable, but the set of 6 (visual materials) or 11 (music) character positions could be repeated within the field. When the field was restructured and expanded to other USMARC specifications, the field was made repeatable and the set of character positions defined for each category of material was made nonrepeatable. The visual materials 007 covered motion pictures (1970-1980) and projected graphics and videorecordings (1976-1980); each category currently has a separate 007 defined. The music 007 covered only sound recordings.
The following table maps the earlier structures onto the current 007 fields:

In 1981, newly structured 007 fields for projected graphics (00, code g), motion pictures (00, code m), videorecordings (00, code v), and sound recordings (00, code s) became valid; a 007 for microforms (00, code h) was defined.
In 1982, 007 fields for maps (00, code a) and globes (00, code d) were defined for map and kit material; the 007 field for sound recordings (00, code s) was extended to kits.
In 1983, 007 field for nonprojected graphics (00, code k) was defined for two-dimensional nonprojected graphic material.
In 1985, the 007 field for motion pictures (00, code m) was extended to character positions 08-22 for archival characteristics when field 009 (Physical Description Fixed Field for Archival Collection) was made obsolete.
In 1990, 007 fields for text (00, code t) and for unspecified material (00, code z) were defined for all forms of material.
In 2002, the Computer file 007 field was renamed to “Electronic resource.”
