Summary

GAO reviewed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) new rule on occupant crash protection. GAO found that (1) the rule requires all designated seating positions in rear seats, other than side-facing seats, be equipped with Type 2 integral lap/shoulder safety belts; side-facing seats may be equipped with either a Type 1 lap belt or a Type 2 belt; and (2) NHTSA complied with all applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
