Evanston, Campus Celebrates Veterans Day with Memorials By Gregory Hafkin - The Daily Northwestern November 12, 2003 About 50 people gathered at Evanston's Fountain Square on Tuesday morning to commemorate Veterans Day. The ceremony featured guards standing silently with rifles, at right. Speakers included Patrick Sullivan, director of the North Chicago Veterans Medical Center, and U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Illinois. On Northwestern's campus University President Henry Bienen and Naval ROTC midshipmen lay a wreath on the World War II memorial near University Library, at top. Midshipmen also read the names of alumni killed in conflict. Tuesday marked the 85th anniversary of the end of World War I. There are over 26 million U.S. veterans, about 650,000 of whom live in the Chicago area, according to The Associated Press. |
