Air Quality Planning Processes at Selected Airports
RCED-94-197R July 29, 1994Full Report (PDF, 8 pages)
SummaryPursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the processes three airports used to assess the effects of construction or expansion projects on air quality. GAO noted that: (1) the three airports used different environmental planning approaches because of differences in the timing or scope of their projects; (2) the Denver International Airport prepared an environmental assessment and impact statement to evaluate its project's effect on air quality and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the project on the condition of the airport's continued compliance with state laws to reduce air pollution; (3) Washington National Airport's environmental assessment concluded, and FAA agreed, that its expansion project will not adversely affect air quality; and (4) FAA approved two projects at Boston's Logan International Airport that did not require environmental assessments. |
