Author Eugene Linden and Former Senator Timothy E. Wirth To Discuss Future Global Stability
WHO: Eugene Linden, author of The Future in Plain
Sight (1998, Simon & Schuster), and the Honorable
Timothy E. Wirth, President, United Nations
Foundation and former U.S. Senator (D-Colo.)
WHAT: Will offer a presentation and lecture,
"Trying Predictions: Are We Headed for
Global Instability?"
WHEN: 6:45 p.m. October 6
WHERE: Montpelier Room, Sixth Floor, Madison Building,
101 Independence Ave. S.E.
BACKGROUND:
Mr. Linden offers a prediction of the global socioeconomic
condition based on the assumption that "the normalcy of the past
50 years is an illusory lull in what will become a much less
stable world." Mr. Wirth, as president of the U.N. Foundation,
focuses on collaborative efforts required to face the challenges
of the future.
Mr. Linden has been a journalist for 25 years. He writes
about science, technology and the environment for Time magazine.
He has contributed to the Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall
Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Inc., and National
Geographic. Before The Future in Plain Sight, his most recent
book was Silent Partners.
Mr. Wirth heads the U.N. Foundation, created early this year
when R.E. "Ted" Turner made a major financial commitment to
support United Nations causes, such as children's health and
environmental protecton. Mr. Wirth was undersecretary of state
for Global Affairs from 1993 to 1997. He represented Colorado in
the U.S. Senate from 1987 to 1993 (when he chose not to run for
re-election) and the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to
1987, representing Colorado's second congressional district. He
was a White House Fellow under President Lyndon Johnson, and
served as deputy assistant secretary for education in the Nixon
administration. He is a graduate of Harvard College and holds a
Ph.D. from Stanford.
