State Technical Committee meeting
Jon Hall, Maryland State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), announced
that NRCS will hold a meeting of the Maryland State Technical Committee on
Tuesday, November 20, 2007, from 9:30 am - Noon. The meeting will be held at the
NRCS State Office in the downstairs conference room (suite 205), 339 Busch’s
Frontage Road, Annapolis, Maryland 21409.

FY2007 Conservation Activities
The 2002 Farm Bill recognized the need for locally led conservation programs
and provided $9,761,678 in Fiscal Year 2007 conservation financial assistance
funding in Maryland for the following USDA NRCS Conservation Programs. NRCS and
Conservation Partnership employees provided conservation technical assistance to
landowners that benefited approximately 200,000 acres of agricultural land.
These programs help to meet the natural resource goals set by Maryland's
Conservation Partnership.

Maryland Farmers Should Apply Now for Conservation Assistance Provided by
NRCS Programs
“The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland is encouraging
farmers to come into our field service centers now to learn how conservation
programs can assist them in solving the natural resource concerns on their ag
land,“ said State Conservationist Jon Hall. “This is an excellent opportunity
for farmers to work with NRCS and its partners to create or revise a
conservation plan for your farm.”

Jon Hall Named State Conservationist for NRCS Maryland
Jon F. Hall, a 33-year career employee with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has been
selected as the State Conservationist for NRCS Maryland at the State Office in
Annapolis, Maryland.

Maryland's agricultural community -- pressures of development and the high cost

partnership is trying to help improve ways to manage some of those costs and

NRCS Provides $2.8 Million to Protect Maryland Farmland
“Maryland conservation partners and land preservation groups have until April
27, 2007 to apply for $2,821,176 in conservation funds through the 2002 Farm
Bill’s Farm and Ranchland Protection Program”, said Mark Rose, Maryland

2002 Farm Bill Provides $65 Million in Federal Conservation Funds to
Maryland's Farmers in Fiscal Years 2003-2006
The 2002 Farm Bill recognized the need for locally led conservation programs
and provided $65,477,399 in conservation financial assistance funding in
Maryland from October 1, 2002 to September 30, 2006 (Fiscal Years 2003-2006) for
the following U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Conservation Programs. These
programs help to meet the natural resource goals set by Maryland's Conservation
Partnership. Demand for cost-share program assistance typically exceeds the
annual funding appropriated by Congress for USDA Conservation Programs.

NRCS Maryland Seeking Funding Proposals for Conservation Innovation Grants
Annapolis, MD, February 8, 2007 ---Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State
Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced the application
period to receive proposals for the Maryland State Component for FY2007
Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG). NRCS Maryland expects to fund
approximately $335,000 in CIG proposals that would include a minimum of four CIG
applications at up to $75,000 per grant. Applications must be received by 4:00
pm EST on Friday, March 30, 2007.

NRCS Maryland Employee Minnick Volunteers for Second Tour as an Agricultural
Advisor in Afghanistan
Annapolis, MD, January 31, 2007 --- John Minnick, a career employee with the
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland recently
volunteered to begin a second continuous tour of duty in eastern Afghanistan,
reported Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, NRCS Maryland State Conservationist.

EQIP and WHIP Conservation Funds Remain Available:
Maryland Farmers Need to Apply NOW
Annapolis, MD, January 29, 2007 ---Virginia (Ginger) L. Murphy, State
Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Maryland, announced the extension of
the timeframe for Maryland’s farmers to be considered for financial assistance
in the USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) (through
February 28, 2007), and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program
(WHIP) (through February 16, 2007). Both conservation programs are part
of the 2002 Farm Bill. NRCS has leadership responsibility within USDA for
implementing EQIP and WHIP.
