Professional Highlights
•    Michael Ray Smith is the Materials Engineer for the U.S. Federal Highway Administration at the Southern Resource Center (SRC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

•    Mr. Smith is responsible for the identification, development, and implementation of materials technologies throughout the 13 state SRC service area.

•    He began his career with the FHWA in 1991 at the Agency´s Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center located in McLean, VA. In this capacity, he supported the development and implementation of research into modified asphalt technology.

•    In particular, he worked to develop national guidelines for the use of recycled scrap tire rubber in asphalt pavements.

•    In 1995 he began work in the Agency´s Washington, DC HQ Pavement Division where he developed national workshops on state-of-the-practice preventive maintenance technologies including the application of chip seals, slurry seals, and thin overlays.

•    In 1997 he developed national guidelines for the conduct of life-cycle cost analysis in pavement design.

•    To implement the guidelines he developed a two day workshop and has provided training and instruction to more than 30 State highway agencies throughout the country.

•    Recently, Mr. Smith transferred to the Southern Resource Center in Atlanta Georgia where he provides consulting support services in life-cycle cost analysis and materials engineering techniques.

•    At the National Center for Asphalt Technology, located at Auburn, he conducted research on the use of latex in hot-mix asphalt concrete. Mr. Smith is a member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologist.
