Employment

Temporary Positions

The Tongass National Forest hires for a number of temporary positions each year. A season of employment is generally from April to September. Our most common needs are forestry aids/technicians, biological science aids/technicians, laborers, and guides, although other series are needed.

For the past few years, we have joined with other forests in a nationwide automated program to make it easier for you to find temporary work within the Forest Service. The program provides access to Forest Service jobs in more than 400 locations across the country.

If you're interested in applying for a temporary position using the automated system, you should contact your local Forest Service office, call the national recruitment office toll-free at 1-877-813-3476, or write to USDA Forest Service, Automated Staffing Application Program, 1249 S. Vinnell Way, Suite 108, Boise, ID 83709. A yearlong recruitment bulletin is posted on the Internet at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Seasonal field-going positions are forestry aids/technicians and biological aids/technicians. Salary ranges from $7.95 to $13.49 per hour plus 25 percent cost-of-living allowance. Additional information is available at www.fs.fed.us/fsjobs.

We also advertise for positions directly out of Region 10 (Alaska). All vacancy announcements are also posted on the Internet at www.usajobs.opm.gov. A number of different positions are available, such as archeology aids/technicians, hydrological technicians, surveying technicians, guides, information clerks/assistants, and laborers.
