Tongass Forest Plan Implementation Clarification

August 7, 1998

To the Tongass Leadership Team

An objective of Tongass Forest Plan implementation is the consistent application of Plan Standards and Guidelines across the Areas and Districts of the Tongass Forest, while continuing the involvement of the partner Federal and State agencies that assisted originally in the development of the Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines.

Enclosed are clarification papers developed to assist in the implementation of the Tongass Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines. These have been developed by the Tongass Plan Implementation Team (TPIT), comprised of the Forest Service and other Federal and State agencies, working collaboratively over the past several months.

These papers are for the purpose of clarifying the existing management direction presently contained in the Forest Plan. Any actual changes in the Plan Standards and Guidelines or new management direction proposals would necessitate a Forest Plan amendment; this has not been within the scope of TPIT activities.

The enclosed papers are the result of many hours of interagency discussions and collaboration, and review by specialists within the agencies. Yet clarification material such as this is dynamic and seldom "final"; changes will likely be necessary over time as this material is applied and tested in the field.

As future clarification papers are developed, they also will be distributed, updating this current publication. Questions or requests can be directed to any of the three Tongass Planning Staff Officers.

Please give your attention and support to the application of the enclosed material.
