National Center for Research and Data (NCRD)
Mission:
In 2001 the National Center for Research and Data (NCRD) was created to coordinate all research, evaluation, and data units of CWLA. The NCRD structure allows for greater collaboration among the units.
Vision:
NCRD seeks to produce quantitative and qualitative research studies, maintain an online child welfare database, offer consultation to states and agencies, and make available evidence-based practices to improve outcomes for children and families through the effective use of information and knowledge.
Overall Goals:
- To provide agencies, states, and interested people with one of the largest online databases of annual child welfare data.
- To produce quantitative and qualitative research studies in many areas of child welfare including workforce, foster care, adoption, and behavioral management.
- To make available annotated bibliographies, literature reviews, research tools, presentations, and articles in an easily accessible format through the internet.
- To help state, local, and tribal child welfare agencies and the courts in improving outcomes for children and families through the use of information technology.
- To provide consultation and technical assistance to states and agencies working to improve child welfare services through the constructive use of research and data.
NCRD includes:
- National Data Analysis System
- National Data Analysis System (NDAS) is the most comprehensive collection of child welfare and related data in the country. Started in 1999, it covers a wide array of topics that reflect services to children and families for every state in the United States. Through its publicly accessible web site, NDAS is a tool that organizes large amounts of information, a resource to learn how states are collecting data, and a knowledge base to complement other sources of data, such as longitudinal data. NDAS is interactive, allowing users to download statistical data to their desktops.
- Research and Evaluation
- Research and Evaluation Department (R&E) produces original and secondary research studies in a variety of child welfare areas, aids program staff in developing program evaluation ideas, performs evaluations for grant-funded work, and manages an Internal Review Board.
- Research to Practice Initiative
- Research to Practice (R2P) provides agencies and the general public with access to thorough annotated bibliographies on a variety of child welfare topics, literature reviews, program evaluation analyses, research tools, presentations, and consultation designed to help agencies promote evidence-based decision-making.
- National Resource Center for Child Welfare Data and Technology
- The National Resource Center for Child Welfare Data and Technology (NRC-CWDT) is a Children's Bureau-funded resource center providing technical assistance to states, courts, and tribes in meeting data reporting requirements and using data effectively, with a focus on the child and family service reviews and other efforts to improve outcomes for children and families.
