McClung Museum To Receive Federal Grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 11, 2006

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN) announced today that the Frank H. McClung Museum has been awarded a grant as part of the Save America's Treasures program.  The grant is for the maintenance of the Tennessee Valley Authority archeological collections, and is in the amount of $100,000.

The Save America's Treasures program provides for investments in the preservation of significant and endangered cultural works that contributed to America's history.  The program recognizes projects that help tell the story of the Nation and that preserve such information for future generations.

The TVA archeological collections contain artifacts and information found during excavations prior to the construction of TVA-planned reservoirs in the early 20th Century.  The excavated archeological sites yielded information about prehistoric Native American life and early Cherokee history in the State of Tennessee.

"The McClung Museum is a local treasure here in East Tennessee.  I am pleased that the museum will receive this funding to maintain its archeological collections," said Congressman Duncan.  "The collections provide a unique look into the early history of Tennessee and of our Nation."

The Save America's Treasures program is administered by the National Park Service and in collaboration with the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
