Duncan Announces TAA Eligibility for Gemtron Workers

For Immediate Release

September 7, 2005

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., (R-Tenn.) announced today that former employees of Sweetwater-based Gemtron Corporation are eligible to apply for federal aid.

The affected employees produced glass for appliances such as oven doors and refrigerator shelves, and the Department of Labor has concluded that work completed in the company's Knoxville facility has shifted to Mexico.

Workers separated from the company on or after August 16, 2004, are eligible to apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).  The program offers displaced workers retraining services, job search and placement support, and relocation assistance.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will administer the benefits.  Employees interested in seeking assistance may contact the department at (615) 741-1031.
