Duncan Announces Grants for Fire Departments Across Second District

For Immediate Release

August 17, 2005

Knoxville, Tenn. - Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., (R-Tenn.) announced today that the Department of Homeland Security has named five East Tennessee volunteer fire departments recipients of federal grant funding.

The awards total over $670,000 and will be distributed to the departments as follows:

  1. Friendsville Volunteer Fire Department ($65,823),
  2. Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department in Madisonville ($185,250),
  3. Niota Rural Volunteer Fire Department ($90,250),
  4. Notchey Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Madisonville ($213,959), and
  5. Seymour Volunteer Fire Department ($120,543).

The Homeland Security program distributes one-year grants directly to local fire departments, improving their ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards.  This important source of funding supports selected departments by providing them the tools and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public and their firefighting personnel.

Seymour's grant is dedicated to the department's operations and safety.  The funding can be used for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, modifications to fire facilities, and other similar purposes.

The grants awarded to Friendsville, Hopwell, Niota, and Notchey Creek will be used to acquire new firefighting vehicles.

"I am very pleased that the brave men and women who volunteer their time and risk their lives to serve our communities during emergency situations will benefit from this federal funding," Duncan said.
