Productivity rose 1.3 percent in the nonfarm business sector in third-quarter 2008, as
hours fell faster than output. Unit labor costs increased 2.8 percent. Manufacturing
output per hour fell 2.7 percent; unit labor costs increased 7.6 percent. All rates are
seasonally adjusted annual rates.

Unemployment rates were higher in October than a year earlier in 361
of the 369 metropolitan areas and lower in 8 areas. Among the 310
metropolitan areas for which nonfarm payroll data were available, 125
metropolitan areas reported over-the-year employment gains, 169
reported losses, and 16 had no change.

Productivity in the nonfarm business sector—as measured by output per hour—rose at a 1.3-percent annual rate in the third quarter of 2008, slower than the 2.1 percent rate over the last four quarters, and slower than the trend rate of 2.5 percent per year from 2000 to 2007.
