Washington, DC – United States Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded, through the Housing Choice Voucher – Family Self Sufficiency Program, $194,032 to the Housing Authorities of East Orange and Orange.
The Housing Choice Voucher program allows very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to lease or purchase safe, decent and affordable privately-owned housing. Under this program, Family Self Sufficiency aims to encourage the development of local strategies to coordinate the use of assistance with public and private resources to enable participating families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency.
“A home is an investment,” Payne said. “It’s an investment in the future of the homeowner and the community. As homeowners pay off their mortgages, they accumulate wealth in the form of equity. Homeowners are also more likely to be involved in community development including neighborhood relations, grassroots social involvement, and the electoral process. This funding will help to bolster long-lasting homeownership which has become increasingly important in this mortgage crisis.”
• The Housing Authority of the City of East Orange received $128,532. • The Housing Authority of the City of Orange received $65,500.
