Washington, DC – United States Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that Head Start has awarded $1,387,434 to the Leaguers Early Childhood Development Center in Newark, NJ.
Head Start, a program that assists children from low-income families, promotes school readiness through the enhancement of social and cognitive development and through the providing of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services. The program gives grants to local public and private non-profit and for-profit agencies to offer comprehensive child development with a particular concentration on facilitating preschoolers develop early reading and math skills.
“Studies have shown that investing in a child’s early development will pay major dividends for the rest of his or her life,” Payne said. “The type of early care a child receives can affect their academic achievement, cognitive and social skills, and behavior. This grant will help to ensure that our children continue to receive the important tools necessary to succeed in life.”
