Congressman Payne Announces Winners of 14th Annual Congressional District Arts Competition

Tenth District Congressman Donald M. Payne has announced the winners of the 14th Congressional Arts Competition, an annual contest for high school students throughout the 10th Congressional District of New Jersey.   Students compete for a chance to come to the nation’s capitol in Washington, D.C. for a ribbon-cutting ceremony as well as to have the winning entry displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for one year.  This year’s ceremony will take place on June 28th.

First Place in the competition was awarded to Mattias Lanas of Millburn High School for his newspaper collage entitled “The Awakening.”  Congressman Payne offered his congratulations, saying “This talented young artist from Millburn High School follows in the footsteps of others whose skill and creativity have set them apart and who have gone on to achieve many great things. I congratulate all of the young people who participated in this year’s competition and thank them for sharing their outstanding art work with us.”

Since the inception of the Congressional Arts Competition, thousands of high school students from around the nation have participated in a variety of categories representing different media ranging from collage to painting.  Judged by a panel of local artists, the top three Tenth District entries from each media are given special recognition at an awards ceremony at the Newark Museum hosted by Congressman Payne.

“As a former teacher,” Payne said, “I fully appreciate the value of a well-rounded education.  Art increases intellectual diversity and enhances creative expression.  It is as much a part of a complete education as writing, science and math.”
