Payne Appointed United Nations Delegate
by President Bush

Tenth District Congressman Donald Payne, a senior member of the House International Relations Committee, has been appointed to serve as a Congressional delegate to the United Nations by President Bush.  Payne’s name was submitted to the White House by the Ranking Member of the Committee, Congressman Tom Lantos of California, and approved by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  Payne was one of two members of Congress selected to serve this year as a U.N. delegate.  The other appointee is Congressman Amo Houghton, a Republican from New York.  Appointments to the position of Congressional U.N. delegate alternate between the House and Senate each year.

Payne, the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa, will participate in the 58th United Nations General Assembly in New York tomorrow, Tuesday, September 23rd.  President Bush will address the General Assembly tomorrow, the opening day of the General debate.

“I look forward with enthusiasm to serving as a delegate to the U.N.,” Payne said.  “At this time in our nation’s history, it is more crucial than ever that we work to promote peace, justice and economic stability around the world.”
