I voted “Present” on the latest Iraq resolution because I could not in good conscience support a measure which expressed “unequivocal” support for a war which I believe is ill-conceived and could have been avoided through diplomacy. Furthermore, the resolution politicized the issue by praising President Bush first for his decision to go to war, before even mentioning our troops who have been sent to conduct the military operation. Like all Americans, I offer my support and prayers for the young men and women far from home whose lives are now on the line. I am especially sensitive to their well-being because my district is comprised of a larger percentage of low-income and minority individuals, who serve in disproportionate numbers in the armed forces. I am hopeful that there will be a quick end to the hostilities so that these young people can return home and resume their lives with their families. |
