Summary

GAO reviewed the Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) new rule on electronic orders for controlled substances. GAO found that (1) the final rule provides an electronic equivalent to the DEA official form that is required for all distributions involving Schedule I and II controlled substances, and allows, but does not require, registrants to order Schedule I and II substances electronically and maintain records of these orders electronically; and (2) DEA complied with applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
