Summary

GAO reviewed the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) new rule on standards for e-prescribing under Medicare Part D and identification of the backward compatible version of adopted standards for e-prescribing and the medicare prescription drug program. GAO found that (1) the final rule adopts uniform standards for medication, history, formulary and benefits, and fill status notifications for the e-prescribing program, adopts the National Provider Identifier as a standard for identifying health care providers in e-prescribing transactions; and (2) CMS complied with the applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
