Congressman Akin Votes to Condemn Ad that Defames General Petraeus

Washington, DC- Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) ranking member of the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee voted today to condemn the MoveOn.org ad that defamed the very General the Democrat majority in Congress confirmed this year.

“After confirming General Petraeus, the Democrats then ordered him to give a report of the progress in Iraq,” said Akin. “Before he could even do so they pre-judged his report and refused to condemn the inflammatory ad against him.”

Today the Republican minority forced a vote to affirm the House of Representative’s support for General David Petraeus, as well as their condemnation of the MoveOn.org ad which appeared in the New York Times on September 10, calling him “General Betray Us.”

House Republican leaders had requested Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) to schedule a vote on the Petraeus resolution (H.Res. 644) to no avail. The Senate has already passed a similar resolution a week ago.

“General Petreaus is a man of impeccable character and education, and I find this type of personal attack against him by Moveon.org irresponsible and offensive,” concluded Akin.

General Petraeus graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) as a distinguished cadet in the top 5% of the Class of 1974. He also earned a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from Princeton University.
