TENTH DISTRICT STUDENT ART COMPETITION YIELDS LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRIES

Delahunt To Display All Art Work From Area Students Available For Public Viewing From May 24 To June 3

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep Bill Delahunt announced today that he would make all entries from the 10th Congressional District Art Competition available for public viewing and display at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset from May 24 through June 3.

“The volume, variety and quality of this student work is a real testament to the artistic talent and potential in our region,” said Delahunt, adding that the opportunity to encourage and witness the artistic expression of the district’s young people is one of the most welcome and enjoyable parts of his own job.

Roughly two hundred entries were submitted from students throughout the 10th Congressional District – which include paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media, photographs and computer graphics. The contest’s top winner will be shipped to Washington, DC to be displayed for a full year in the US Capitol and will be offered a $20,000 scholarship to the Savannah School of Design in Savannah GA.

All submissions are now being reviewed by an independent panel of judges.  Given the enthusiastic interest among students and high caliber of art, Delahunt wanted to make sure all entries would be on display.

While prizes will be awarded, Delahunt said, “the overall objective is to recognize and encourage the artistic potential of all our kids.”

A reception will kick off the exhibition later this month in Cohasset to honor the South Shore and Cape & Islands high school participants.  It will take place from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 24 at the South Shore Art Center on 119 Ripley Road, Cohasset.  Hours and directions for the center are available at www.ssac.org

More information about the competition is available from Rep. Delahunt’s office, toll-free, at 800-794-9911 -- or online at www.house.gov/delahunt/artcomp.shtml.
