All applicants under 18 years of age are required to prove that they are in school or exempt from school attendance when DMV issues their first Oregon driving privilege, and in other limited situations. Proof is required when DMV:
- Issues an instruction permit or any driving privileges for the first time;
- Issues an instruction permit, driver license or any driving privilege following a cancellation or revocation;
- Reinstates driving privileges following a suspension for withdrawal from school; or
- Clears a suspension for withdrawal from school before the suspension goes into effect.

The form must be obtained from your school, school district or educational service district. The following are options that can be marked on the form:
- Enrolled in a secondary school of this state or any other state;
- Attending a community college and making satisfactory progress toward a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate;
- Being taught by a private teacher or parent in compliance with ORS 339.035; or
- Exempt from school attendance requirements under ORS 339.030(2).

- Statement of Enrollment, DMV Form 735-7185 – The form must be completed and signed by an authorized representative of your school, college or education service district. This form is only available through your school or educational service district office.
- Proof of high school graduation – This can be a copy of your high school diploma, a certified copy of your high school transcript showing your graduation, or a letter on school letterhead signed by the principal or their designee, stating that you have graduated from high school.
- Proof of receipt of Oregon GED certificate – This can be a copy of your GED certificate or a letter from the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, on agency letterhead and signed by an authorized representative, stating that you received a GED certificate.
- A signed statement along with any supporting documentation, describing why you cannot attend school due to circumstances beyond your control. DMV makes the decision whether you will be allowed an exemption based on the information you submit. The determination is only for DMV’s purpose of issuing driving privileges, and does not exempt you from any requirement to attend school.

- Statement of Enrollment, DMV Form 735-7185 – There is an exemption option on the form that can be checked. The form must be completed and signed by an authorized representative of your educational services district or the school district who has jurisdiction over your residence area. This form is only available through your school, school district or educational service district office.
- A letter from your school district, educational service district, or the Oregon Department of Education, on agency letterhead and signed by an authorized representative, stating that you have been granted an exemption from school attendance under ORS 339.030(2).

|
If you are married or emancipated and under 18 years of age, you still need to provide proof of school enrollment or exemption.

| Home-Schooled |
|
You need to obtain a completed Statement of Enrollment form from your educational service district office.
|
| Applying When School is Out |
|
If you expect to apply for a license or permit when school is out, you need to think ahead and get a completed Statement of Enrollment form from your school while it is open.
