Renewing Our Commitment to the Baha’is of Iran
Our district is home to the Baha’i Temple.  We know the Baha’i religion as one of peace, tolerance and diversity.  Baha’is remain the largest minority in Iran.  Since President Ahmadinejad came to power, the Iranian government stepped up its persecution of Baha’is.  All Baha’is were forced to register with the state – their movements tracked, their daily lives closely monitored.  The government expelled Baha’is from universities and denied Baha’is business licenses.  The government destroyed Baha’i cemeteries and arrested three Baha’i youths.  In January, the parliament introduced a draft law that would order the execution of all apostates, a term often applied to Baha’is.  Last night, things went from bad to worse.  The Iranian government arrested the senior leadership of the Baha’i community.  Their fate is now unknown.  It is time for the world to speak out against the government-sponsored ethnic cleansing campaign targeting the Baha’i community of Iran.  Click here to read more about this horrific violation of human rights.
