REP. JOHNSON ANNOUNCES DOD APPROPRIATIONS FOR U. OF I.

Urbana firm gets grant help for innovative cooling units for troops

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Timothy V. Johnson today announced a $2 million grant for University of Illinois Nanomedical Technologies Research.

A second grant awards $1 million to Creative Thermal Solutions of Urbana for development a miniature cooling unit for soldiers that is smaller, lighter and more mobile than units currently in use.

The grants are contained in the Department of Defense Appropriation Conference Report passed by the U.S. House today.

“This is great news for the University of Illinois, for the cause of medicine, and of course in the case of Creative Thermal Solutions, for our troops,” Rep. Johnson said. “The strength of the research enterprise here continues to demonstrate itself in the acquisition of these awards and I am proud to advocate for the university and my district. These grants go a long way not only in terms of the local economy but in terms of our collective, national interests.”

“This is great news and we thank Congressman Johnson for his strong support and leadership in obtaining funding which will clearly enhance our state land-grant mission,” said Richard H. Herman, Chancellor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“This funding will lead to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as find new ways to design drugs and detect biohazards by extending the advanced methods of nanotechnology to the realm of biology and medicine,” said Ilesanmi Adesida, dean of the College of Engineeering and the Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "

“We at CTS are extremely grateful for Congressman Tim Johnson's support, as this is great news,” said Pega Hrnjak, President of Creative Thermal Solutions. “For CTS and its employees to have this opportunity to develop a product that will benefit our men and woman in uniform is truly an honor.”
