Rep. Johnson Monitoring Flooding in Southern Illinois

Washington, D.C. -  U.S. Rep. Timothy V. Johnson continued to monitor the ongoing flooding situation in several Southern Illinois counties today.

Rep. Johnson praised the efforts of emergency workers and promised to use the resources of his office to seek a national emergency declaration if state assessments of damage warrant such an appeal.

“We know people are hurting in Lawrence, Crawford, Clark, Cumberland, Coles counties and nearby areas,” Rep. Johnson said. “I applaud the time and energy spent by the people on the ground there trying to hold back the water and hold the most vulnerable people from harm.

“This is not an easy task, not something many of these victims can easily plan for, and not something many have ever experienced. Members of my staff have also been there and in routine contact with local leaders and emergency personnel. I have been in direct contact with local officials hoping to keep abreast of the situation. We will continue to help ensure that all relevant government agencies and resources are brought to this situation as necessary.

“We just went through this process in the northern part of the district, where hundreds of families were rendered homeless or severely affected by January rains in areas of Livingston and Iroquois counties. This is unfortunately an all-too familiar process. My heart goes out to the victims and we will spare no effort in getting people help they deserve,” Rep. Johnson said.

“Aside from the homes, businesses and public facilities damaged, we also are evaluating damage to farmland for possible claims eligible to be pursued through the Farm Service Agency and National Resources Conservation Service,” Rep. Johnson said.
