2008 Nevada Veterans Legislative Summit

The purpose of this summit is to bring together Nevada Legislators, Veterans and their advocates, members of the Nevada Veterans Services Commission, and the staff of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services to discuss proposed veterans-related legislation and prepare for the 2009 Nevada Legislative Session.

SUMMIT LOCATION: The Eastside Cannery Resort will play host to the summit.  This resort is located at the former site of the Nevada Palace, on Boulder Highway between Flamingo Road & Tropicana Avenue.

We need as many veterans and their advocates to attend this summit, so please feel free to spread the word to other Nevada veterans.  This will be a great opportunity to meet several Nevada Legislators and learn how to become a veteran’s advocate during the upcoming legislative session.

SOUTHERN NEVADA VETERANS MEMORIAL CEMETERY RECEIVES $2.3 MILLION!!

On Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, VA's Undersecretary of Memorial Affairs, the Honorable William Tuerk, presented Governor Jim Gibbons with a check for $2.3 million. These funds will be used to construct a new maintenance facility and service yard on the Cemetery grounds.

“We are honored to partner with the Nevada Office of Veterans Services and to provide this grant to help Nevada improve memorial services for veterans,” said Mr. Tuerk.

Through the State Cemetery Grants Program, VA partners with 125 cemeteries across the country, helping states establish new veterans’ cemeteries and expand or improve existing cemeteries. Since the Program began in 1980, VA has awarded 172 grants, totaling $344 million.

Governor Gibbons stated, “As America’s heroes are laid to their final rest, Nevada’s ability to honor their service to this country will be greatly enhanced by this grant.”

The Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City is the second busiest State Veterans Cemetery in the United States. In fact, one out of every ten veterans buried in a State Veterans Cemetery is buried there.

In addition to the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, the State also administers the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley. The Nevada Office of Veterans Services Cemetery Program, established in 1989, is the final resting place for over 20,000 veterans and their family members.
