Oklahoma Earthquakes 2005

Earthquakes Felt Near Oklahoma City

Fifteen  small earthquakes occurred in the Luther, Harrah, and Jones, Oklahoma, areas east of Oklahoma City areas from Tuesday, October 21 to Tuesday, October 28.  The largest earthquake, magnitude 3.1, occurred at 2:05 pm on October 21.  Residents reported the felt earthquakes sounded like a sonic boom or distant thunder, and a few people were awakened by the early morning quakes.  No one has reported any significant damage.

No cause for the earthquakes has been established, although this phenomena does occur in Oklahoma.  The Oklahoma Geological Survey locates some 50 small earthquakes each year around the state, with very few reported being felt.

The events as of 4 p.m. Thursday, October 28, 2008, include:

Drought in Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles
Ranks in "Extreme" Category in 2008

Learn more about the drought by checking the links provided. Photos show the dry weather's impact on the land where the top soil has been blown away in some areas exposing the hardpan. The text, graphs, photos, and a movie of the drought's progression clearly demonstrate the forces of climate on the earth's surface.

X-Ray Imaging Lab Opens at OPICxrayproject

The Oklahoma Geological Survey's Oklahoma Petroleum Information Center (OPIC) now provides x-ray imaging services to help users determine more about the characteristics of cores that are available for examination through the facility. The majority of OPIC's cores are from Oklahoma, although some originated in other states as.

Video x-ray fluoroscopy is a unique, analytical imaging technology that produces a continuous, real-time, in-motion, x-ray image of a core as well.
