AUSTIN, Texas -- More than 1,000 manufactured homes are now occupied throughout disaster-affected areas, giving displaced residents a "place to call home."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has challenged itself and its partners, including contractors, energy companies and others, to install manufactured housing as quickly as possible and get people, whose lives were disrupted by Hurricane Ike, into these homes.

FEMA has installed, on private sites or in commercial mobile home parks, more than 1,000 manufactured housing units; and of those, more than 400 have been made ready for occupancy just within the last week.

An additional 400 mobile homes are in the installation process. Added to the 1,017 units installed, that's a total of more than 1,417 manufactured homes.

In most cases, individuals and families sign occupancy agreements the same day the unit is hooked up to power. Many individuals have worked hard to make things happen quickly, including the cities and counties that approved temporary waivers to allow manufactured units to be placed in the 100-year floodplain.

The following is a chart that shows where the units have been placed and how the numbers have climbed since last week's report.
