 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Tiger Recreation - Fitness and Sports consists of the Fitness Center, Leggett Pool, and the Intramural Program.

Entrance to The Fitness Center including Leggett Pool
The Fitness Center operates on a PIN-code access control system (the PIN number will be the last six digits of an individual’s social security number).  This procedure should provide a reasonable degree of security and will promote better management of the Center.

Hours of Operation for Fitness Center
The following schedule applies when Hampden-Sydney College classes are in session.  Hours will be adjusted during holidays, special events, and the summer.

 Monday – Thursday    6:30 am – 11 pm
Friday                          6:30 am – 8 pm
Saturday                      8 am – 8 pm
Sunday                        1 pm –11 pm

 Membership
Unlimited free membership for Hampden-Sydney College Tiger Recreation programs at the Fitness Center , Leggett Pool (both located in Kirby Fieldhouse), and Intramurals is provided to the following groups:

Students
Must be enrolled as a degree candidate at Hampden-Sydney College (excludes high school students taking classes at Hampden-Sydney College). Hampden-Sydney College students have unlimited use of all Tiger Recreation programs during the summer as long as they are returning in the fall.  Upon graduation Hampden-Sydney College students may elect to purchase a Fitness Center membership.  Spouses of Hampden-Sydney College students are granted unlimited free membership.

Faculty and Staff
Spouses and legal dependents are included (see definition below).

Part-time coaches are eligible during dates of employment.

Temporary college employees as defined on page 3-2 of the Employee Handbook are excluded. 

ARAMARK Staff
Management includes employees, their spouses, and legal dependents (see definition below).

Non- management includes employees only (excludes temporary employees).

 Trustees
Active and former Trustees along with their spouses and legal dependents (see definition below) are included.

Retired Hampden-Sydney College Faculty and Staff
This group includes spouses and legal dependents (see definition below).  “Retired employee” is defined for these purposes as someone who has retired at age 62 or older with at least 10 years of service.  Current retirees of Hampden-Sydney College may use the unlimited free membership benefit.

Alumni
Alumni visiting the College for special alumni-related events (i.e. Homecoming, Parents Weekend, Alumni College) may obtain a limited free pass to the Fitness Center from the Alumni Office.  This is extended to spouses and legal dependents (see definition below).

 Legal dependents:  A person who relies on someone else for financial support. The definition of a legal dependent is one who is supported solely on by the member and can claim that person on their taxes.  Legal dependency includes spouses and minor children up to 19 years old (24 years old for full-time students).  If you have any questions as to who is considered a legal dependent, please view your tax forms or visit the Human Resource Office. 

To participate in activities at the Fitness Center, Leggett Pool, legal dependents must be 14 years of age or older.  Legal dependents between 14 and 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times and must attend an orientation class on proper usage of equipment and weight training.  These orientation classes are held once a month and last about two hours.  Sign-up forms are available at the Control Desk.  Legal dependents 13 years of age and under may not participate in activities. If they accompany a member, they may sit in the lounge/vending area. Exceptions to the age rules may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Director of Tiger Recreation.

Policy for Guest Participation in the Fitness Center:

  • All guests must be 16 years of age or older. Immediate family of students (i.e. parents/guardian and siblings) may use the Center as guests AND must be accompanied by the student.

  • Students may bring one guest per visit to the Fitness Center.  (Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.)

  • All other members may bring one guest per visit but may bring the same guest only once per month.  (Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.)

  • Guest passes for ten visits per year will be issued for a fee of $25.  There is no limit on the number of passes that can be purchased.

  • Guests must register at the Fitness Center Control Desk and sign a waiver form.

  • Members must check in at the same time as the guest and remain in the Center the entire time the guest is there.

  • Members are responsible for their guest’s actions.  If a guest fails to adhere to the policies of the Fitness Center, the guest and the member may be asked to leave.

Fitness Center General Policies

·         The Fitness Center is a controlled access facility.  Only authorized users are permitted entry and must enter and exit through the Control Desk. 

·         Responsibility for general supervision of building, fitness area, and racquetball courts rests with the staff members and supervisors directly in charge of the activity or area.  Students provide primary supervision for the facility and act with the full authority of the Fitness Center Director.  Harassment or disregard of the directions provided by the staff will result in immediate removal from the facility and may result in additional disciplinary action. 

·         Profane or indecent language is inappropriate. 

·         Appropriate attire is necessary to gain access to the Fitness Center.  Shirts and shoes must be worn in all non-aquatic activity areas.  The College reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate attire. 

·         Only clean, closed-toe athletic shoes with non-marking soles are permitted in activity areas. 

·         The possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs (steroids, inhibitors, etc.) is prohibited.  The use of tobacco products including smokeless tobacco is also prohibited. 

·         Food may not be consumed outside the lounge/vending area.  Beverages are permitted in activity areas only if contained in a resealable, non-glass container.

  • Animals are not permitted in the building.

This information is available at the Control Desk at the Fitness Center.

Membership
Membership in Leggett Pool is included with membership in the Fitness Center.  All members who are permitted free membership in the Fitness Center may also use the pool year-round at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.  (See Fitness Center Membership for list of eligible members).

The Leggett Pool summer membership program will continue to be offered as a stand-alone program to accommodate individuals and families in the surrounding community who wish to join the pool only.

Legal Dependent:  There is no age restriction for legal dependents to participate in activities at the Leggett Pool but all legal dependents 13 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Policy for Guest Participation in the Leggett Pool

  • Guests of all ages are welcome.

  • There is no limit on the number of guests an individual may bring.

  • Guests will be charged $2.00 per visit.

  • Guests must register at the Fitness Center Control Desk and sign a waiver form.

  • Members must check in at the same time as the guest and remain in the facility the entire time the guest is there.

  • Guests 13 years of age and under always must be accompanied by an adult. 

  • Members are responsible for their guest’s actions.  If a guest fails to adhere to the policies of Leggett Pool, the guest and the member may be asked to leave.


Leggett Pool General Policies

  • All patrons must enter through the Fitness Center Control Desk.

  • No one is allowed in the pool unless a lifeguard is on duty.

  • Horseplay, such as running, shoving, and dunking is not permitted.

  • Diving is permitted only in designated areas and may be restricted at any time for any reason.  Young children must be supervised when using the diving board.

  • Large inner tubes and floats are not permitted.

  • An adult must accompany children wearing water wings or infant/child floatation devices.

  • No one should hang, sit, or stand on the ropes dividing the swimming lanes.

  • Food, glass containers, and metal objects are not permitted in the pool area.

  • Persons with open sores are not permitted in the pool.

  • Appropriate swim attire must be worn.  Infants and toddlers must wear swim

  • Patrons must take showers prior to swimming in the pool.


Racquetball Courts
The courts are open to all members.  From 4– 7 pm, only students, faculty, and staff may reserve the courts.  All members must reserve a court time.  Reservations may be made no more than 48 hours in advance of the day that court time is requested.  Reservations are made in 30-minute increments – maximum of two consecutive 30-minute reservations.  If courts have not been reserved, members may use them on a first come, first-served basis.  Eye protection and safety cords must be used.

Lockers
Lockers are available in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.  They may be used on a daily basis or rented on a six-month basis for $50.00.  All members who wish to use lockers (daily or rented) are required to provide a personal lock.  Locks may not remain on lockers overnight unless the locker is rented.  Items left overnight in non-rented lockers will be discarded.  Hampden-Sydney College is not responsible for any items left unattended inside the locker rooms.  (See the attendant at the Control Desk to rent a locker.)

Towel Service
The Fitness Center provides both workout and shower towels for members.  All those using the Fitness Center are required to have a towel in their possession while working out.  Towels must be placed in the appropriate bin upon exiting the Fitness Center.  Towels are not to be taken from the Fitness Center. 

GymWipesÔ Usage
To keep the Fitness Center equipment clean, patrons must disinfect the machine at the end of each workout session with GymWipesÔ that are provided throughout the Center in black bins.  GymWipesÔ are an alcohol and water-based cleaning and disinfecting solution Used wipes must be discarded in the appropriate container.

How to use the Cardio Theatre
There are seven televisions suspended from the ceiling in the Cardio Theatre.  To listen to a television, members must tune into the posted frequency for that television using headphones and radios with an FM frequency. The use of digital radios is advised in order to eliminate interference with other radio frequencies.  Each television has its own set station.  Only the Fitness Center staff can change television stations.  Requests for a change of channel should be directed to the Fitness Center staff.

SPECIAL PROGRAM CLASSES
Special programs are offered through the Fitness Center.  These programs are outside of the regular membership and may

  • have fees associated them.
  • have participation limits.
  • require participants to sign up in advance .
  • require participants to sign in at the Control Desk of the Fitness Center.

Other Important Information
The Weight Room at Gammon Gym is available only to students, faculty, and staff. 

Summer Camp participants will not be permitted in the Fitness Center.  At the discretion of the Summer Programs Director, campers may be permitted to use the weight room at Gammon Gym and/or Leggett Pool.
