Image of Assistive Technology Assistive technologies ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to information/electronic and telecommunication work environments. Although CAP does not sell any products, CAP provides objective information about assistive technology products and rehabilitation equipment for people with all types of disabilities, including both apparent physical disabilities as well as hidden cognitive disabilities: blindness/low vision; cognitive; communication; deafness/hard of hearing; and dexterity. Information available through CAP includes all assistive technologies whether acquired commercially, modified or customized.

Blind/Low Vision

Conditions ranging from the presence of good usable vision, low vision, or the absence of any sight at all resulting in total blindness.

Cognitive

Cognitive impairments are considered disturbances in brain functions, such as memory loss, problems with orientation, distractibility, perception problems, and difficulty in thinking logically. Cognitive impairment is a syndrome, not a diagnosis. There are many conditions that can cause cognitive impairments, including: multiple sclerosis, dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), stroke, and traumatic brain injury. For CAP's purposes, this does not refer to developmental disabilities or mental retardation, nor does it include cognitive impairments associated with old age.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing

The term "deaf" refers to people who are unable to hear well enough to understand speech, preventing the use of speech as a means for processing information. The term "hard of hearing" refers to people who have a level of hearing that ranges from the ability to hear environmental sounds to those who can understand speech even on the phone, usually with the help of a hearing aid.
