Payment: All rentals must be pre-paid to confirm rental reservation.

Trunk Delivery and Pick-up: Teachers are responsible for picking up, returning and/or shipping trunks.

Great Basin Native American Traveling Trunk
Grades 3 and 4
Explore and touch objects to learn about the history and culture of the Northern Paiute Indians in a hands-on, interactive way! The trunk provides background information on the landscape, history, and culture of the Northern Paiute tribes living in the Great Basin of Oregon. The Great Basin extends across the southeastern portion of the state. The Great Basin Native American Traveling Trunk includes topic-specific objects, photographs, and lesson plans.

Oregon Trail Traveling Trunk
Grades 4 and 5
Examine replicas of Oregon Trail diaries and handle objects brought over on the Oregon Trail! The Oregon Trail Traveling Trunk describes life on the Oregon Trail and includes hands-on artifacts, primary source documents, and four related lesson plans that explore trail diaries, mapping the trail, and how landscape affects human migrations. A related slide program offers students a virtual tour of the trail experience.

Lewis and Clark Traveling Trunk
Grades 4, 5, and 8
Explore and touch replicated Expedition objects to learn about the purpose of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Corps of Discovery’s encounters with Native Americans. The trunk also includes an Expedition timeline, primary source documents, including excerpts from Lewis and Clark’s journals and letters, and two lesson plans on mapping and trade relations.

Portland Traveling Trunk
Grade 3
Discover how Portland has changed and grown in the last one hundred years and how community participation builds a city! The Portland Traveling Trunk is organized around the following themes:
  • Getting Around in Our Community—Bridges
  • Keeping Our Community Safe—Firefighting
  • Celebrating Our Community—The 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition.


Through hands-on artifacts, lesson plans, and a related slide program, students see examples of the three types of moveable bridges in Portland, learn about the ways firefighting in Portland has changed with time, and learn just how big, and just how fun the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition was.

**NEW Coastal Tribes Native American Traveling Trunk

Grades 3 and 4

Touch and study the rich collection of objects provided by members of the Coastal Tribes of Oregon. Besides over thirty objects, this trunk includes background information for teachers and students, a suggested list of additional resources, maps, and three lesson plans.

Oregon Folklife Traveling Trunks

Grades 3-12

Learn about Oregon's diverse cultural landscape in five traveling trunks.  Trunks includes self-contained instructional units focused on specific topics of traditional arts and cultures in Oregon including the Chinese, Laotians, Mexican American, Traditional Arts, and Native American tribes in Oregon.  Hands on artifacts, video and audio media, and learning materials introduce students to the history, geography, customs, beliefs, and artistic traditions of a community while encouraging them to explore their own cultural heritage and traditions. Book a Folk Artist through the Folklife Arts Program to conduct a workshop, residency, or performance and extend your classroom's cultural journey.
