Williams Expected to Play this Week

According to General Manager Jim Rutherford, Justin Williams’ long yet shorter-than-expected rehabilitation process could come to an end soon.  Very soon.

“You’ll probably see Williams play this week,” said Rutherford.  “I know he’s been working hard and he’s passed every test he’s had.  He’s way ahead of schedule, which we’re all a little nervous and cautious about, but he’s passed every test and you’ll probably see him this week.”

The initial prognosis after Williams ruptured his Achilles tendon in September had him back no earlier than mid-January.  A return against Pittsburgh on Thursday, which Rutherford didn’t rule out, would put him over a month ahead of schedule.

ImageJustin Williams was born on October 4, 1981 in Cobourg, Ontario. With great hockey influence from his Dad Craig, loving support from Mom Denise and an inspirational figure in his Great Uncle, Jerry Toppazzini (who was a solid player played in the NHL for 14 seasons), Justin started to play hockey at the age of five.
Justin played minor hockey in Port Hope, Ontario gaining a reputation as a skilled playmaker. His junior career started with the Cobourg Cougars of the OJHL in 1997. He completed his junior hockey career playing two seasons with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. Justin lead the Whalers to the 1999-00 OHL finals with a league high 14 goals and 30 points.

Justin was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers 28th overall in the 2000 Entry Draft held at the Pengrowth Saddledome, in Calgary. He immediately made the jump to the Flyers NHL roster as a teenager in 2000. Justin scored a goal and had two assists in his debut October 5th, one day after his 19th birthday. In 63 games as a teenager, he scored 12 goals and added 13 assist for 25 points.
