Elgin Luke Joins IHA'S Life Member Family

Elgin Luke, IHA's National Coaching Director, was bestowed Life Membership at Ice Hockey Australia's recent Annual General Meeting held in Sydney on the 18th October 2008.

A long standing member and participant in Australian ice hockey for over 40 years, Elgin arrived in Australia from Canada in 1962. He played for New South Wales and won the historic Goodall Cup in 1963. The same season Elgin was selected to represent Australia in the Winter Olympic Elimination Series against Japan.

Elgin moved to Melbourne, Victoria, in 1964 to join the Melbourne Blackhawks and played for the Hawks for six years. He coached the Hawks in his sixth year prior to transferring to the Monarchs as a player/coach winning three Kleiner Cups (Victorian Premiership) during this period.

He coached several Victorian State Goodall Cup Teams winning the historic Cup five times in succession from 1972 to 1976.

In 1974, Elgin was appointed Head Coach of the Australian Senior Men's Team in Grenoble, France. In 1976, he was also Head Coach of the Australian National Team when they hosted the West German Olympic Team.

In 1979, Elgin initiated the first Coaching Development Council in Victoria and was appointed the National Coaching Director in 1981.

Elgin held various coaching roles over the next ten years and in 1992 was appointed Head Coach for Australia's National Youth Team for the Asian-Oceania in Japan.

He moved to Queensland in 1996 and has since coached a number of Queensland State Teams in IHA's National Championship and is currently IHA's National Coaching Director.

A gentleman and great ambassador for Australian ice hockey, welcome to IHA's Life Member Family.

IIHF Conducts Development Audit On Ice Hockey In Australia

Mr. Adam Sollitt, IIHF Development Auditor, joined IHA's Board and Directors at their Annual General Meeting in Sydney on the 18th & 19th October 2008 to commence IIHF's Development Audit on Ice Hockey in Australia and the various development programs employed by Ice Hockey Australia. Following the meeting, Mr. Sollitt traveled to Adelaide to visit the IHA Office and complete his audit.

IIHF's purpose for the audit is to conduct a thorough analysis and create a database to identify and register fields where there is potential for improvement. It is the intent of the IIHF to review the information gathered through the audit to create a comprehensive development concept for all IIHF member countries ranked 12th and lower in the IIHF World Ranking System.

Mr. Sollitt had just completed the member Asian countries, followed by Australia and New Zealand. He will then travel back to his home in Finland to commence auditing the member European countries and South Africa. A mammoth task with a target completion date prior to IIHF's May 2009 Semi-annual Congress in Bern Switzerland.
