Air and Space Museum: Discovery Stations

(For all ages) 10 different Discovery Stations are featured on varying days. These stations are hands-on interpretation centers that encourage learning through looking, discussion, and activities related to aviation, space exploration, astronomy, and planetary geology. Volunteers or museum staff offer visitors a 3-12 minute immediate, informal, and interactive experience that includes artifacts, teaching objects, games, and directed activities. American History Museum: Carts

Docents are stationed at carts, in various locations around the museum, to help visitors learn about the museum's collection through hands-on historical activities (e.g., use a cotton gin, peek through a stereoscope, feel what it was like to wear a corset, use a press to print a card, ask questions about immigration, and try copying a letter the way Jefferson did). Daily, between 10:30 AM and 3 PM

Natural History Museum: Discovery Room

(1st floor, East Wing, near African Voices -- New Location) The Discovery Room is a hands-on room for families with children and students. The room features activities using real museum objects and artifacts that allow visitors to explore the natural world at their own pace, guided by their own interests and sense of wonder. Visitors can look at fossils, skulls, shells, and minerals; use a microscope; try on costumes from around the world; and much more. Docents are available to assist and answer questions.
Entry Procedures: Individuals: - Walk-in for families with children and students. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Zoo: - Giant Panda Interpreters

(outside Panda House) Mon.-Fri., 10 AM-4 PM Sat. and Sun, 10 AM-4 PM Volunteers share information on giant pandas, their habitat in China, special adaptations, and more (inside Panda House). Also, on Saturdays, 10 AM-1 PM, behavior watch volunteers will answer questions about what they look for on their observation watch. Note: Pandas Tian Tian (male), Mei Xiang (female), and Tai Shan (male cub) may be resting indoors, especially during hot weather.
