The Laboratory requires outstanding
science and technology (S&T) to meet demanding
missions and respond to challenges to the nation. Continual
reinvestment is necessary to sustain S&T vitality.
Programmatic funding from the National Nuclear Security
Administration provides for much of Livermore’s
broad S&T base and exceptional research capabilities.
Internal institutional investments—the
decisions made about hiring new staff, revitalizing
capabilities, and pursuing exploratory research directions—are
also essential. These investments strengthen Livermore’s
abilities to carry out current programs, create discovery-class
science and innovative technologies, and enable future
missions of national importance.
Laboratory
Directed Research and Development (LDRD).
The LDRD Program is one of the Laboratory director’s most important tools
for developing and extending Livermore’s intellectual foundations, for
enhancing core strengths, and for driving future S&T vitality.
LDRD funds high-risk, potentially high-payoff projects
at the forefront of S&T. By investing today, the LDRD Program ensures
that the Laboratory will be ready to meet future challenges to national
security.
The LDRD Program was created by the DOE to provide
a suitable method for laboratory directors to fund projects that are
creative and innovative, but that might not otherwise receive funding
via the usual processes. LDRD activities are governed by DOE Order 413.2a,
and other DOE guidance.
Together, program-sponsored and internal investments
provide opportunities to pursue great science and to attract and retain
an outstanding staff that is at the heart of the Laboratory.
