Lionel Conway

Lionel ConwayBorn and educated in London, England, Lionel Conway began his publishing career with Dick James Music in London. During his tenure with James, Conway had the enviable job of placing Beatles’ songs with British artists. In the late 60s, while still with DJM, he worked with Elton John and Bernie Taupin, culminating in a brief spell as manager of Elton in 1970. Shortly thereafter, Conway was ready to run Chris Blackwell's Island Publishing Company. During his 21 years with Island, he personally signed some of the world’s finest writing talent; Cat Stevens, Dave Stewart, Robert Palmer, Ian Hunter, Tom Waits, Mick Jones (Foreigner), Paul Rogers (Bad Company), Andy Fraser (Free), Steve Bray (Madonna’s Co-Writer), Garry Wright, Jimmy Cliff, Trevor Horn, and U2.

In 1975, Conway moved to North America, starting Island’s U.S. office in Los Angeles. After Island was purchased by Polygram in 1990, he stayed with the company, overseeing Island’s writers. In 1992, Conway joined Madonna’s new company, Maverick, as president of publishing, working very closely with both Madonna and manager, Freddie De Mann. During his 7 years with Maverick, Conway signed Grammy winner, Lucinda Williams, and platinum acts, Vertical Horizon and Candlebox.

After Maverick was acquired by Warner Chappell, Conway continued to consult and oversee Maverick’s writers until 2001, when a very interesting opportunity came about to serve as President of publishing for Mosaic Media Group. During the 4 years, he acquired Hamstein Music, which included all songs written by ZZ Top and over 40 Country #1 hits, and the Daksell Selldak Catalog containing over 100 Aerosmith songs, including the well known Dream On, Walk This Way, and Sweet Emotion.

In 2005, Mosaic sold its publishing company to Stage Three Music, a U.K. company run by Steve Lewis in London, and lead by Lionel Conway in North America.
