April 21, 2008 — Online course packs from XanEdu® Custom Publishing are an earth friendly alternative to traditional publishing

XanEdu leads market in providing eco-friendly custom course materials

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — In celebration of Earth Day, XanEdu® Custom Publishing, part of National Archive Publishing Company (NAPC), introduces online course packs to the higher education market as an eco-friendly custom publishing solution.

“It takes an entire tree to produce just three traditionally printed course pack orders,” says Tyler Steben, Vice President, XanEdu Custom Publishing, “As the nation’s leading provider of custom course materials, it is natural for us to leverage our groundbreaking digital content and delivery options as an environmental advantage and encourage campuses to go green with online course packs.”

Students can purchase an access key to their online materials through XanEdu’s ecommerce storefront and view their course content at any time, from any Internet connection—eliminating (or significantly reducing) the reams of paper and energy consumed by the commercial printing and production processes, not to mention the emissions related to making the paper and print cartridges, and from the transport of materials to students.

Even sold through a campus bookstore as an access key package, online course packs use 97% less paper than a traditionally printed pack; the package contains an access key printed on a single sheet of paper and just a front cover, back cover, and fully recyclable piece of corrugated cardboard.

“Online course materials are not a new offering for XanEdu—they’re used by many programs looking to bring relevant content and technology into the classroom without the copyright risks associated with hosting digital content. But it is important we share the adverse impact of printing materials, and help our customers realize there are more environmentally friendly alternatives,” said Steben.

For educators who prefer printed materials, XanEdu is taking steps to reduce the carbon footprint of those offerings, as well. The paper used for XanEdu’s print and online plus print course pack formats contains post-consumer waste and is free of acid and elemental chlorine. Compared to virgin paper milling, this manufacturing process:

  • Requires 10% fewer trees
  • Is 4% more energy-efficient
  • Emits 4% fewer greenhouse gases and 9% fewer hazardous air pollutants
  • Generates 5% less solid waste and water pollutants

Additionally, Copley Custom Textbooks, an imprint of XanEdu, can print professor’s own original works, lab manuals, and anthologies on 100% recycled paper and with soy ink.

Also this Earth Day, XanEdu launches a campaign to donate $1 to American Forests for each registered faculty and bookstore visitor to their Webpage dedicated to sharing information about eco-friendly course materials. Through American Forests, a non-profit organization dedicated to planting trees for environmental restoration, every dollar plants a tree.

XanEdu is the faculty-preferred provider of course packs and custom textbooks and the nation's leading provider of digital and print titles through an expansive collection of premium content (particularly business content). XanEdu provides groundbreaking multimedia content and delivery options and ensures 100% copyright compliance for each item, every term.

More information about XanEdu’s campaign to go green is available at www.xanedu.com/ecopack.shtml.

John Dougan, Shelby County Archives.

Content Solutions offers imaging, image conversion, metadata capture and creation, text conversion, custom output formatting, film duplication and replacement, and various other digitization and microfilm services.
