GLENN MARA
Principal Associate Director for Weapons Programs

Glenn Mara has more than 33 years of experience in the materials science, design, engineering, testing, production, and dismantlement of nuclear weapons. He played major roles in the transition of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) under the test moratorium, stockpile life extension projects, project management at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and operations, serving as LLNL’s deputy director for operations. His most recent work focused on applying and coordinating resources of the University of California (UC) for continuous improvement of LANL operations.

Mara has both technical and management experience at LLNL on almost all facets of the nuclear weapons program. As deputy director for operations, he was the institutional leader of the Integrated Safety Management System that resulted in a reduction in injury rates to less than half of the industry average. He worked to champion improvements in facility maintenance management that eliminated maintenance backlog growth two years ahead of schedule.

Mara reestablished regular ties and quarterly meetings of the three UC laboratories to share best practices, discuss lessons learned, and resolve issues in business and operations. He was responsible for the Ten-Year Comprehensive Site Plan, and establishing metrics and determining trends in ES&H, security, and business practices.

During the 1990s, he led LLNL’s Weaponization and N programs. He was responsible for the engineering elements of the SSP—including assessment, certification, refurbishment, and dismantlement—and for supporting engineering research and development for the LLNL-designed systems in the stockpile. He led the Underground Nuclear Testing Program and was a leader of the NTS transition from underground testing to the SSP.

Mara holds M.S. and B.A. degrees in welding engineering ( Ohio State University). He has served on a number of external review and advisory boards associated with the nuclear weapons program, national security, and engineering science. He received a U.S. Department of Energy Weapons Recognition of Excellence Award for technical and management leadership in nuclear test engineering.
