STATE OF MANUFACTURING

  • The PMI fell sharply in October, indicating a significantly faster rate of decline in manufacturing. It appears that manufacturing is experiencing significant demand destruction as a result of recent events, with members citing challenges associated with the financial crisis, interruptions from the Gulf hurricane and the lagging impact of higher oil prices. This is the lowest level for the PMI since September 1992. In this report we see inflationary pressures dissolving as the Prices Index fell to 37 percent, the lowest level since December 2001. Export orders also contracted for the first time following 70 months of growth.
  • New orders for manufactured goods fell by $11.2 billion (2.5 percent) in September, marking the second consecutive month of declines. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 3.7 percent. This was the largest percentage decrease since the series was first stated on an NAICS basis in 1992.
  • Average hourly earnings (1982 dollars) for manufacturing production workers ticked up $0.02 in September, following a one-cent increase in August. Real earnings have decreased by 2.7 percent over the year.
