STATEMENT OF ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL CHRISTOPHER A. WRAY
ON THE UTAH OLYMPICS BRIBERY TRIAL

“We are disappointed in Judge Sam’s rulings. In our view, the evidence that the jury was permitted to hear was more than sufficient for the case to go to verdict. The government believes that the Olympics bribery case was an important one to bring to uphold the rule of law, and we continue to believe that the citizens of the United States, especially the people of the state of Utah, had the right to have this criminal case decided by a jury. We appreciate the dedicated and professional work of the prosecutors and agents who investigated this case and presented evidence. We are grateful that the federal appeals court’s earlier reversal of this trial judge permitted us to bring the case to trial, but regret that he ruled before the jury could decide the case, leaving the government with no further opportunity to appeal.”
