JUSTICE DEPARTMENT'S TOP ENVIRONMENTAL ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL

TO ADDRESS ASSOCIATION OF MUNICIPAL ATTORNEYS

Will Discuss Local Land Use Planning and Superfund Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Justice Department's top environmental law enforcement official, Assistant Attorney General Lois Schiffer, will address the International Association of Municipal Lawyers on Monday, March 30, 1998, at the Washington Sheraton Hotel at 1:00pm.

Ms. Schiffer will discuss two of the most significant environmental topics currently pending before Congress: local land use planning and Superfund reform. She will discuss the Department's objections to the "Private Property Rights Implementation Act of 1997," pending in Congress which would take local land use planning decisions away from communities. She also will discuss the Administration's new Superfund Settlement policy for municipalities, which helps them deal with contaminated landfills and get out of Superfund litigation quickly and fairly.
