ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES 1999 AG ADVISORY COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General Janet Reno has appointed eight new members to her 1999 Attorney General's Advisory Committee of United States Attorneys. The Committee, created in l973, advises the Attorney General on law enforcement issues and gives the U.S. Attorneys a key voice in Department policy. Each of the new members will serve two-year terms effective January 1, l999.

The new members are:

Lynne Battaglia, District of Maryland

Saul A. Green, Eastern District of Michigan

P.K. Holmes, III, Western District of Arkansas

Walter C. Holton, Jr., Middle District of North Carolina

B. Todd Jones, District of Minnesota

Beverly Baldwin Martin, Middle District of Georgia

Judith A. Stewart, Southern District of Indiana

Charles R. Tetzlaff, District of Vermont

"These U.S. Attorneys have been a driving force on issues such as health care fraud, community outreach, border law enforcement and providing prosecutors with the tools they need to fight crime. Together they will bring a significant amount of expertise to the Committee," Reno said. "In making these appointments we have tried to achieve a balance of office size, judicial districts and diversity."

Several of the newly-appointed Advisory Committee members are currently serving on a number of Advisory Committee Subcommittees.

Battaglia chairs the Advisory Committee's Ethics in Government Subcommittee and co-chairs the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Working Group. She also serves as a member of the Department's Executive Review Board. Ms. Battaglia is a member and former chair of the Advisory Committee's Health Care Fraud Subcommittee. She also serves on the following subcommittees: Civil Rights; White Collar Crime; Environmental Crimes; Law Enforcement Coordinating/Victim Witness; Organized Crime/Violent Crime/Violence Against Women; and Controlled Substances/Drug Abuse Prevention and Education. Ms. Battaglia was a member of the Attorney General's 1994-1995 Advisory Committee, serving as vice chair in 1995.

Green chairs the Organized Crime/Violent Crime/Violence Against Women Subcommittee and is an active member of the Border and Immigration Law Enforcement Subcommittee.

Holmes serves on the Environmental Crimes, Domestic and International Terrorism, White Collar Crime, and Public Corruption Subcommittees.

Holton is a leader in developing strategic approaches to community safety in his district and serves on the Justice Programs and Health Care Fraud Subcommittees.

Jones chairs the Immunity Working Group and is a member of the Juvenile Justice and Native American Issues Subcommittees.

Martin serves on the Health Care Fraud and White Collar Crime Subcommittees.

Stewart vice chairs the Asset Forfeiture Subcommittee and is an active member of the Environmental Crimes and Organized Crime/Violent Crime/Violence Against Women Subcommittees.

Tezlaff is a member of the Border and Immigration Law Enforcement Subcommittee, serving as vice chair for the Northern Border. He has made major contributions as a member of the Health Care Fraud and Sentencing Guidelines Subcommittees.
