Fourth Clovis Escapee Nabbed by U.S. Marshals

Albuquerque, NM – Fugitive Victor Sotelo, one of eight prisoners who escaped from the Curry County Adult Detention Center Sunday night, is back in custody. Sotelo was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Southwest Investigative Fugitive Task Force late last night at an apartment in the 1200 block of Ortiz Street in Southeast Albuquerque.

Acting on a lead developed by investigators with the Curry County Sheriffs Office, Marshals apprehended Sotelo just before midnight without incident. Sotelo was awaiting trial on aggravated assault charges prior to his escape.

Still at large in the escape are:

  • Edward Salas, convicted of the murder of a 10-year-old boy.
  • Larry McClendon, charged with murder.
  • Michael England, charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence.
  • Louis Chavez, charged with burglary, larceny, and receiving stolen property.

Escapee Victor Apodaca was apprehended shortly after the jail break, and escapees Raynaldo Enriquez and Javier Zapata were apprehended Monday night in Texas by U.S. Marshals.

District of New Mexico U.S. Marshal Gorden Eden Jr. has pledged all available resources to assist Curry County Sheriff Matt Murray’s investigation regarding the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives. Eden stated the team effort between all agencies involved is the key to success in these situations and said “Sotelo’s arrest is yet another example of how law enforcement is working together to apprehend these violent and very dangerous criminals.”

The U.S. Marshals Service arrests in excess of 58,000 state and local fugitives annually, and arrests more federal fugitives than all federal agencies combined.
