LONG-RANGE PLANNING
Presentation to the Board of Regents, September 19, 2002

In an effort to provide The Regents with an approach that will allow them to assess the University's progress in maintaining its renowned levels of excellence during this decade's exceptional enrollment growth, Senior Vice Presidents Bruce Darling, Jud King, and Joe Mullinix and Vice President Larry Hershman made an extensive presentation about long-range planning issues at The Regents meeting in September 2002.

This report was requested by The Regents to emphasize the importance of protecting and enhancing the quality of the University's teaching and research programs while addressing the challenges of enrollment growth and constrained resources. It is intended that this will be the first in a series of discussions about key policy and planning issues that will face California and the University in the decades ahead.

The presentation was in six sections:

Overview
Enrollment Plans
Faculty Recruitment and Retention
Resources
The Housing Task Force Report
Summary and Future Topics

Each of the slides in this presentation is accompanied by a set of notes summarizing the points made about that slide by each presenter.
