We currently have the following volunteer internship opportunities available;

Program and Policy Internship

Job: Program and Policy Intern
Organization: Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI), Health and Human Services
Location: Hubert H. Humphrey Building, 200 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC
Time commitment: 10 to 40 hours per week
Duration: Fall 2008 internships are available.  Length of internship is negotiable.
Compensation: Unpaid

Description:

The Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is looking for a self-starter to work independently and on teams on projects related to equipping faith-based and community organizations with the necessary tools to successfully compete for federal funding. 

Opportunities include:

  • A unique view of policy from inside the Executive Branch of government, including the opportunity to interact with White House staff
  • An excellent opportunity to work with and learn about a variety of agencies within the large and diverse HHS organization, including the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and many others
  • An excellent experience to learn skills in administration and policy from a talented group of public service employees and political appointees.
  • Develop a database to track participation of faith-based and community groups in HHS programs.
  • Manage information to be posted on the Center's web site.
  • Write informational materials about the Center's activities and mission.

Requirements:

We are looking for a college student, who is interested in public policy and eager to contribute to a team environment to further social service and public health goals. The intern should have strong computer, writing, and other communication skills, and have a flexible and positive attitude. An interest in the administration's Faith-Based and Community Initiative is also desirable but not required.

Special Assistant to the Associate Director of Health

Job: Special Assistant to the Associate Director of Health
Organization: Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, Health and Human Services
Location: Hubert H. Humphrey Building, 200 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC
Time commitment: 10 to 40 hours per week
Duration: Fall 2008 internships are available.  Length of internship is negotiable.

Description:

We’re looking for motivated individuals who are willing to assist CFBCI in accomplishing the President's Executive Orders and reach our agreed to tasks in the CFBCI OMB management agreement. This includes encouraging and developing technical assistance so that faith-based and community organizations can participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities. Issues include: international and domestic HIV/AIDS, obesity, global health, primary care delivery, organ donation, rural health, and disease prevention.

Opportunities Include:

  • Coordinating a comprehensive departmental effort to incorporate faith-based and other community organizations in health programs and initiatives to the greatest extent possible;
  • Proposing the development of programs to increase the participation of faith-based and other community organizations in health promotion and service provision;
  • Developing and coordinating departmental outreach efforts to disseminate health and funding information more effectively to faith-based and other community organizations on initiatives and opportunities; and
  • Assist in the development of evaluation plans for programs and the effectiveness of our office
  • Data collection

Requirements:

  • Graduate student with some experience or education in public health policy
  • Proficiency in SPSS, excel, and access
  • Good editing skills
  • Must be self starting and able to work with little management. Also must be able to accept relatively undefined tasks and bring them to completion, working both independently and in groups
