The latest technology and research related to by-products of producing poultry, product vendors, and "success stories" are all part of the 2008 National Poultry Waste Management Symposium. The symposium is being held in Des Moines, Iowa on October 21 and 22, with an optional Environmental Facility tour on October 23.

The symposium subtitle is "Balancing Economic and Environmental Issues" and emphasizes economically viable options for managing environmental challenges and opportunities. Several presentations focus on the timely topics of air quality and using poultry litter as an energy source.

Rich Reynells, USDA CSREES, has been associated with the symposium for several years. He says that participants come away from the symposium with very positive attitudes toward the future of the industry. "They gain the opportunity to network with experts in environmental protection for the poultry system and hear the latest information regarding current issues potential impacts on their business or programs. They are able to discuss issues with peers and learn how they are dealing with problems and participate in the tour and see firsthand what others are doing in these areas."

More than 160 people attended the most recent symposium, held in 2006, in Arkansas. The next symposium will be held in 2010.
