The cancer drug Herceptin® has been used successfully for several years in treating women with a particularly strong form of breast cancer that has spread to other organs. But, could it work as effectively in the earlier stage of the disease to prevent spreading to other organs? Medical researchers set out to answer this question in clinical trials involving of 3,351 women and the results were stunning.

UK Chandler Hospital has combined neurology disciplines into one institute
so we may treat disorders of the nervous system, brain, spine, bone and
musculoskeletal system in dramatic new ways to achieve dramatic new
results. The vision of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute is to have physicians and scientists working collaboratively from different disciplines to find the causes and design new treatments for stroke, epilepsy, ALS, Alzheimer's, brain tumors, and state-of-the-art treatments for torn ACLs, joint replacements, degenerative spinal disorders and spinal cord injuries.

The UK HealthCare neuroscience team can treat brain disorders and diseases without invasive surgery at the Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Center. Gamma Knife's state-of-the-art technology allows surgeons to operate on the brain without incisions or general anesthesia. Gamma rays safely treat tumors and abnormalities deep inside the brain. The risk of complications and side effects is greatly reduced with Gamma Knife. Patients spend less time in the hospital and can return to normal activity within 24 hours of the procedure. UK Chandler Hospital is the only hospital in Kentucky with Gamma Knife.
The UK HealthCare Minimally Invasive Surgery Program features the da Vinci® Surgical System. It allows surgeons to improve their procedures by translating the natural hand, wrist and finger movements to the movements of the system. The da Vinci® System's three-dimensional imaging also allows better visibility of the surgery site. Surgeons can make smaller incisions with the da Vinci® System than with a regular surgical scalpel. This results in quicker recovery times, less blood loss and less scarring.
UK HealthCare's Gill Heart Institute offers adult and pediatric cardiac patients the benefits of a Cryo Cath lab. Patients with an arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat, are treated with an ablation. A typical ablation uses heat to correct the irregular heartbeat. However, if the placement of the irregularity is misjudged, the heat could damage the sinus node, which causes the heart to beat. The Cryo Cath harmlessly uses cold energy to isolate the irregular cells. This ensures the correct cells will be treated and normal heart function can be restored. It also helps reduce the risk of a heart block. Patients treated with Cryo Cath report minimal discomfort or pain. Click here for a Cryo Cath fact sheet.
Dr. John Conklin, a UK HealthCare ophthalmologist, was the first in the region to successfully implant the ReSTOR® lens. The lens offers a high level of glasses-free vision for cataracts patients with or without presbyopia, an age-related condition resulting from a gradual loss of flexibility in the eye's natural lens. It is an intraocular lens, meaning that it is a plastic lens that may be surgically implanted to replace the eye's natural lens. The optic design of the ReSTOR® lens allows patients to read clearly and see distant objects.

The Gill Heart Institute echocardiography lab has been accredited in adult echo, stress echo and transtelephonic echo by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories. It is the only lab in the region to have full accreditation as well as five certified lab technicians. An echocardiogram test uses sound waves to create a picture of the heart, which the sonographer, or the person giving the test, can see moving on a screen. Click here for more information.
The
Gill Heart Institute Heart Station includes a Holter monitor, which is a type of electrocardiogram. This sophisticated machine records cardiac patients' heartbeats to determine any unusual beats. It also helps to evaluate chest pain, monitor an implanted pacemaker and determine the effectiveness of therapy for complex arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). The cardiologist can later determine if there is a problem. Click here for more information.
The
Department of Diagnostic Radiology consists of a 1.5 Tesla, open-bore MRI. It provides a high-field strength magnet with a larger bore area to reduce patient anxiety and claustrophobia during the exam. It also enables the imaging of patients up to 550 pounds, with an opening 2.3 feet in diameter and almost one full foot of room between the patient's head and the magnet.

UK HealthCare's voice care program treats adult and pediatric patients with vocal disorders. The latest version of videostroboscopy is used, which allows the physician to pick up the frequency of the patient's voice. A stroboscopic light source is triggered. The light flash frequency equal to the vocal frequency will produce a still image of the vibratory cycle. The video playback includes a detailed recording of the patient's voice, making the disorder easy to identify. Click here for more information about the voice program.
