About CENDI — Highlights from FY 2006

In FY 2006, CENDI continued to serve the federal scientific and technical information management community through its involvement in policy issues, sponsorship of major educational events on technologies, and continued development of Science.gov, a major avenue for the dissemination of the results of federal research and development in science.  Major accomplishments in FY2006 were:

Leadership in Data Issues

CENDI continued its leadership role in the discussion of long-term data preservation.  A CENDI-sponsored session on “The Expanding Universe of Digital Data Collections” was held at the AAAS 2006 Annual Meeting.  Former CENDI Chair, Dr. Walter Warnick, Department of Energy, was selected as the Principal on a newly formed National Science and Technology Committee Interagency Working Group on Digital Data. CENDI and CODATA continued to seek ways to cooperate on this important issue. 

Policy Inputs Keep Members Informed

The Policy Working Group continued to monitor and inform CENDI members of key issues.  Public/private relationships and public access were key topics during FY 2006. Under the leadership of the Copyright Working Group Chair, CENDI provided input to Copyright Office discussions on Section 108 of the Copyright Act.  CENDI supported the initiatives of the Government Printing Office regarding digitization as a preservation format.

Science.gov 3.0 Implemented

CENDI continued supporting the Science.gov development.  During FY 2006, Science.gov advances included MetaRank relevancy ranking and enhanced Boolean and fielded searching. The Alerts Service, launched in FY 2005, increased from 10 subscriptions in February 2005 to over 2,800 in August 2006.  Access to science education materials was upgraded significantly when the National Science Digital Library was included as deep-web database.  Science.gov continued to receive positive reviews and publicity. The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) survey was completed.

CENDI Sponsors Workshops on Key Technologies

More than 300 people attended CENDI workshops during FY 2006, two of which focused on STI dissemination and access technologies.  In April, CENDI again presented the successful “PDF in the Government Environment” that was held initially in FY 2005.  Back by popular demand, the workshop was hosted by the National Transportation Safety Board, a non-CENDI member, and was attended by more than 120 people. In May, more than 100 people attended the Visualization of Text workshop, that was co-sponsored by NFAIS.

Two workshops on metadata were held jointly with FIRM, the federal information and records managers group.  In addition, a successful symposium focusing on the technical and policy issues of preserving long-lived data was held at AAAS in February. 

Other Noteworthy Accomplishments

The second annual CENDI Meritorious Service Award was given to the Science.gov Team for their extensive work to both enhance and provide consistent daily operations of the portal.

R. Paul Ryan, Administrator of the Defense Technical Information Center, became the CENDI Chair in June 2006.
